The Windward, a rescue ship built in England nearly fifty years ago, remains seaworthy under Captain Samuel W Barnlett, veteran of three Arctic runs. Since March the vessel lay at Newburg NE undergoing preparations for the mission.

Berlin papers fear fanatical acts against the Kaiser, while Germans in Posen welcome Polish officials’ boycott to curb incidents. Agnes King of 188 Crawford Street is found dead in a rear room of the Traction Hotel after a drunken quarrel with an unidentified man. The killer fled after slashing under the ear and severing the jugular. a lone witness provides no description. The victim died en route to a hospital.
In Savannah Georgia on July 24 the pleasure sloop Lovell Dell owned by Captain Allen N Calder capsized in the Ogeechee river near Hell Gate during a squall. Captain Calder, his wife and father, his aged mother, and infant daughter Olga perished. The 12 year old Vernon Calder was frightened and pulled tight on the jib halyards causing loss of helm. Captain Calder and others drowned after being trapped in the cabin. Olga the infant was not recovered.
Spokane July 24 Coroner's jury finds three Graham children died from diphtheria amid medical neglect. Parents George and Mrs Graham, members of the Church of God, refused medicine, relying on an elder's anointment. A doctor was later allowed to lance throats but not give medicine. One child survived. Prosecution decision pending.
A blaze in Annapolis Md on July 24 destroyed nine buildings including St Martins German Lutheran Church and E J Jewell General Store with losses around 50000. The fire began in Briegards confectionery in Sister Circle, likely caused by an overheated bake oven. Twenty naval academy guards lent aid as a bucket brigade.
London reports King Edward, after a serious abdominal operation, faces a likely second procedure in the autumn. Officials say the king hopes for an early coronation but warns the empire depends on his recovery. Queen and Prince of Wales remain withdrawn as doctors and routine strictures govern his diet and care at Cowes.

Silas Bennett of Baltimore County fought a large eagle near Gardenville yesterday. After a ten minute battle Bennett escaped to a building, returned with a Winchester rifle, and the eagle had flown. He bears severe cuts on hands and face from the talons.
