The city smashed a ten year heat record with the official thermometer reaching 105 degrees just before 2 PM. Morning temperatures were exceptionally high with 97 degrees by 11 AM and 83% at 6 PM, while a thunder shower was foreseen as the only relief within 24 hours.
A fire in Urbana destroyed William Cadle's Scripps-Booth roadster, burned the roof of the combined barn and garage, and damaged the area as neighbors formed a bucket brigade. Only Dr. W Rodman Cadle’s Ford coupe was saved amid limited water supply and lack of extinguishing chemicals. Insurance covers the loss, and authorities noted the blaze started from a short circuited wire.
At the regular meeting in the Francis Scott Key hotel blue room delegates were chosen for the State Convention in Annapolis August 26 to 28. The largest state auxiliary with 176 members will cast six votes, plus the local unit's one vote for a total of seven, with Mrs. George Birely presiding. Delegates: Mrs. John H. Albaugh, Mrs. Claggett E. Ramsburg, Mrs. Chas. S. Houck, Mrs. G. M. Crumbaugh, Mrs. Ezra Hoffman, Miss Sarah Quinn. Alternates: Mrs. Reno S. Crum, Mrs. Erwin Kump, Mrs. William Quinn, Mrs. Annie Lease, Mrs. William Simmons, Mrs. Robert Putman. Additional business covered the auxiliary birthday party plans at Wayside Inn for Tuesday evening with invitations to local American Legion groups and veterans not in any war organization. An elaborate program, card playing and dancing are planned.
Wilbur Burton and James Allen Holt sought in Virginia for stolen auto charges. After dashing from Martinsburg, West Virginia, they crashed on North Queen Street. A large posse including state troopers and deputies caught them on Williamsport Pike, unarmed and jailed here.
Lieutenant Victor E. Bertrandius, an army flyer on leave from McCook Field, jumped 2000 feet when his plane’s propeller failed of undetermined cause and landed safely after the crash at Sunder’s range in Greburnie Maryland. The aircraft was demolished. The flyer’s home is in Philadelphia. He was flying from Philadelphia to Washington.
Construction on the Stanley-Crandall theatre on West Patrick Street and the City Opera House on North Market Street proceeds amid steel work delays. Steel deliveries arrived late, with completion now expected late September to mid November, despite plans for day and night shifts to meet an opening for early fall. Two local men were arrested in Danville for stealing a Buick car used to move gasoline and later traced to Martinsburg. authorities await transfer back for charges.
Final plans are set for the Ox Fibre Brush Co fourth annual picnic at Braddock Heights on Saturday July 24. Buses run from East Patrick and Carroll streets from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and return 3:20 to 5 p.m. Contests include races, a watermelon eating contest, dancing and a minstrels performance. Prizes range up to $4 with various awards. dancing in the pavilion from 2 to 4:39 p.m.
Brunswick voters head to the polls on Monday August 2 for mayor and three council seats. Mayor Jacob H. Moser seeks another term against Clarence Shewbriden. In Ward I incumbent David Riser faces no opposition, Ward II challenger William B. Wenner opposes incumbent C Albert Orrison, and Ward III incumbent Wilbur Thomas is opposed by Everett Leach.
The fifth annual Luther League of the Maryland Synod meets at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Smithburg. Closing sermon at 9 p m by Rev Ferdin and Hesse with 7 45 p m vesper sermon by Rev W C Day on The Challenge of Youth. Speakers include Clarence C Dittmer and others.

New York traders faced ongoing irregularities as speculative accounts rebalanced during the day. By afternoon, advance seekers seemed to control price moves amid a halted franc slide, easy money policy, and optimistic steel trade reviews. Call money rose to 4 1/2 percent.
In Warren Pennsylvania, a two day fire at Warren Refining Co left only six of more than twenty oil tanks intact. Office buildings and several stores were destroyed after a tank exploded, diesel and paraffin flared along Jackson Run, and paraffin flow was pumped from the stream to prevent further spread toward Conewango Creek.
Tests of the Fishing Creek pipeline to find why water supply is low for elevated city homes have not revealed a leak in the 12 inch main. Lord Culler reports an engineer from Whitman Reynardt Smith Baltimore firm reviewed the line and conducted tests Tuesday night with pressure lowered for several hours after eight. Attention shifts to the city meter near Frederick which may be undersized and fail to record all water used.
George Philias known as George the Greek, a New Kensington coffee house owner, was ordered released by Common Pleas Judge James R. MacFarlane at a habeas corpus hearing in Pittsburgh after city counsel conceded insufficient evidence to detain him further in connection with the slaying of Canton publisher Don R. Meller.
Canton investigation leader C H Sisson returns after five days in Canton. He says Don R Mellett was killed by underworld figures angered by his editorials. Sisson believes the actual shooters were Canton residents and says the assumed gunmen roam familiar streets.
In Washington DC a jury sided with G Walter Fogle in a civil suit arising from a car accident near New Market. The case named Joe Fogle and Moss as parties with Fogle awarded $90.63 and costs. Separate anecdotes recount two Frederick women in Baltimore facing parking violations and a rain soaked drive home with drenched clothing after traffic encounters.
Right Reverend R E L Strider of Wheeling spoke at the Frederick Rotary Club meeting in the Francia Scott Key hotel on progress as four components physical intellectual social and moral. He likened progress to a four cylinder engine and warned that missing any element halts true advancement urging continued development across education and society.
Eastern heat wave shifts as western relief arrives with expected showers tonight and cooler weather tomorrow. 101 degree reading at Keedysville Station noted. forecaster predicts further cooling and widespread showers across the eastern states.
Captain O C Dowling, stand ing at a naval inquiry, describes the July 10 explosion at Lake Denmark N J that killed 21 and caused millions in damage. A Marine private helped Dowling through flames as fires raged and key posts failed, with aid and firefighting efforts continuing amid collapsing storehouses. A final note mentions the Sequoia National Park’s Sherman tree.
