Barge Canal Bill Passes In Senate Vote

The Senate approved a bitterly fought $83 million barge canal and related waterway and pipeline plans aimed at easing East Coast oil shortages. The measure, sent back to the House, would fund a Florida high level lock canal linking the Gulf intracoastal system with inland waterways from Apalachee Bay to Corpus Christi and extend Gulf waterway depth to the Mexican border. It includes potential pipelines from the Gulf to the St Johns River and from Tinsley oil fields to Charleston or Savannah, with final approval granting pipeline authority to the petroleum coordinator rather than the War Department.
