London July 17 Rear Admiral Lord Charles Beresford M P spoke at North Shields on the Morgan shipping combine. He warned that if Britain subsidized shipping America would double her bounty. He favored aiding the Canadian route and charting an Atlantic enterprise. Beresford said two lines could exist with no hurry stressing not to alarm Americans with a ship bounty.
Washington reports official confirmation that Wu Muinster Wu will return to Pekin to join the newly formed Chinese foreign office. He had earlier received a copy of an official decree naming him with Shen Chai Pen as compiler of a new code of laws for China, but doubts remained about his mission’s status. Now he is to proceed to Beijing.
Thirty five miners are killed in Daly West and Ontario mines near Park City Utah after an explosion caused by a miner lighting a candle in a magazine. The blast and ensuing gas killed thirty three at Daly West and two in Ontario, with two rescuers among the dead. Rescue efforts brought many to the surface as shafts and cages were damaged. The Ontario shaft remains with one body still in the mine.
Andrew Freedman has bought a majority of Baltimore Orioles stock from John Mahon and several players are joining New York teams. McGinvit Cronin Bresnahan and McCann head to the New Yorkers while Kelly and Seymour go to Cincinnati. Ban Johnson plans a new American League Baltimore club as the existing game against St Louis is forfeited and the franchise reorganized by Sidney S Frank Harry Goldman and Theodore L Strauss. A full team is expected to be ready by week’s end.

At Intianapolis July 17 the United Mine Workers meet to decide on a nonwalkout stance for soft coal while supporting the anthracite miners. About 1,500 delegates weigh whether to curb soft coal output and avoid a general strike, with sentiment broadly against a strike though divisions persist among anthracite delegates. The president, W. G. Mitchell, declines to dictate, urging convention unity toward the organization’s greatest good. Votes expected before Saturday.
Scranton Pa July 17 official from the Delaware Lackawanna and Western offices reports 110 miners and laborers across 28 collieries have returned to work after striking, with 50 ex-strikers from the Delaware and Hudson. Reinstated workers are cleaning gangways timbering and making repairs, not cutting or loading coal.
In Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania on July 17 William King and Abraham Keithline were cleaning revolvers when a pistol discharged. A bullet struck Keithline in the abdomen, causing a fatal wound. He was taken to the hospital in a dying condition. The two men are brothers in law and well known residents.
One thousand miners from Virginia and North Carolina arrived in the Flat Top coal field yesterday to take places vacated by strikers. Practically no strikers remain in the Norfolk and Western fields as those who stayed have left for other states. Many collieries hire jack men while new workers arrive daily.
Report from San Juan cites good authority that Venezuelan President Castro will be overwhelmed within two weeks. Castro led troops against Termniensis on July. A shell killed twenty four people in Caracas recently.
John W. Mackay of San Francisco was prostrated by heat on Tresday and is now at his Carlton Howse home. Medical officers say he was in a bedridden condition when found, but orders have been issued for him to be cared for properly for several days.
