Thumbs Down On McCarthy Ouster Move
Washington July 15 The Senate Republican Policy Committee turned thumbs down on a move to oust Sen. McCarthy from his committee chairmanships while McCarthy blocked an attempt to shake up his investigations staff. A stormy closed door session saw McCarthy refuse a proxy for the absent Sen. McClellan of Arkansas during a vote to terminate staff appointments by July 31 except those confirmed in their jobs. The proxy was presented by Sen. Symington of Missouri. The committee voted unanimously to authorize Majority Leader Knowland to table any effort to discharge the Senate Rules Committee over organization or operation matters, a move seen as aiming to curb Sen. Flanders’s resolution to strip McCarthy of his chairmanships. McCarthy then announced public hearings in Boston on charges of Communist infiltration of defense plants unless a senator blocks the inquiry. In a separate nonrelated item, a Tampa polio victim gave birth to twin girls, and Cpl. Ivor Rosencrantz, stationed in Korea, called his mother from Kobe, Japan during a rest leave.
