Farmers Losing Money
Farmers are losing money as Ed Reiley reports for the Frederick County Board of Education. A two year study on 30 above average farms shows milk production costs at 4.83 per hundredweight with an average price of 4.80, a three cent loss per cwt. Federal Order 16 places base price at 4.55 for 3.5 butterfat in June, affecting the Upper Chesapeake Bay area including Frederick County. The study notes these farms are more efficient than county average, estimating countywide costs near 4.90 to 5.00 per cwt.
