Space shuttle Discovery lifts off after woodpecker delay

Discovery blasted from Cape Canaveral on a mission to deploy the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite six hours after liftoff. The flight marks a shift with a new engine and Mission Control while four of five crew members hail from Ohio. Authorities note it is the shortest NASA mission gap in 34 years. The $330 million satellite, replacing a craft lost on Challenger, will reach a 22 300 mile orbit after release.

Wingo given two life terms in Maryland case

Edward Charles Wingo age 25 of Damascus received two consecutive life terms plus 30 years for a series of sex offenses, kidnapping, and reckless endangerment. Judge William M. Cave called the acts horrendous and despicable and said Wingo will spend the rest of his life in prison with no parole.

Koenig presses to fire lawyers in murder case

Bruce Wayne Koenig, accused of killing his parents last year and burying their bodies under a loafing shed, seeks to dismiss his public defenders and handle major trial parts himself. He asked Frederick County Circuit Court Judge G Edward Dwyer Jr. to allow oral examinations of witnesses, with a decision deferred to Monday.

Brand X Revealed Georgia Pacific Plans Massive Frederick Center

Georgia Pacific disclosed as Brand X planning a vast Dudrow Business Park lumber center in Frederick County. The site plan approved on Md 8% includes 870000 sq ft of manufacturing and distribution with a 614400 sq ft main warehouse and 208000 sq ft service center. The facility would employ about 90 warehouse workers 60 drivers 80 millworkers and 34 managers with current staff given first chance to transfer. The project aims for about $1 billion in sales by 2000 and would serve as the mother ship to mid Atlantic subcenters in Norfolk and Richland.

Westview Campus restaurant park plans approved in Frederick County

Frederick County Planning Commission approved a site plan for a restaurant park on the Westview Campus off Md. 85 south of I-270. The proposal by John Forstmann includes five buildings totaling about 30,000 to 35,500 square feet on an 8.5 acre parcel with a steakhouse, an Italian venue, and a continental restaurant. One eatery may open next July, but names were not disclosed. The project aims to attract employers with varied dining options near corporate facilities. The plan was grandfathered from Adequate Public Facilities review.

Rare Civil War ambulance arrives at Frederick museum

A rare four wheeled Civil War ambulance has been installed at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick on loan from Lincoln Memorial University. Restored in 1981 for a Knoxville World’s Fair exhibit, the wagon carries wounded widely during the war and will stay for at least five years.

City approves 12 police promotions in reorganization

Frederick officials voted unanimously to promote 12 officers in a department reorganization led by Maj. Regis Raffensberger. Capt. Durner will run the operations bureau and administrative bureau, while 10 officers advance to corporal. Promotions follow a new promotional process including a written exam and panel interview. A city hall ceremony is planned for Monday.
