In Asbury Park 46 people were wounded by shotgun pellets during three days of racial unrest. Fourteen hospitalized. 92 gunshot wounds treated. State Police questioned if trooper fire caused wounds while denying intentional shootings. City seeks housing and policing reforms as Negro leaders press demands.
Two men and three juveniles were arrested Tuesday morning at Fishing Creek City Watershed on marijuana possession charges. Dennis Creager 19 of Wilson Place and Paddy Smith 18 of Swansboro were charged, with three 17-year-olds turned over to juvenile authorities. A warrant had been issued days earlier by Charles Creager. Bond set at 6000 for Creager and 1000 for Smith. Trial date July 23 in Trial Magistrate's Court.
City detectives probe thefts reported over the July Fourth weekend from James C. Nokes at Fair Lane Trailer Park. Stolen items include two shotguns, an electric blanket, a Polaroid camera, shirts, and about 270 dollars in value. A&M Body Shop break in found with window entry and a $32 tool set, back seat of a 1962 car, and a soft drink machine coin loss.
In a tight vote the Senate refused to trim NASA funding, approving a final NASA figure of 3.319 billion as part of a larger 18.6 billion omnibus bill. Lawmakers added 400 million for urban renewal and 300 million for sewerage and water treatment, while Fulbright narrowly failed to strip 300 million from space. Proxmire decried the space spend as a boondoggle while Goldwater argued for restraint and Mansfield urged funding for earthly problems.
Fire log notes a 11:44 p.m. cabin fire on the tow path in Brunswick with responses from Brunswick fire crews. Ambulance calls include eight emergencies and one routine, within the 24 hour period ending 10 a.m. Fire and police communications provide city and county contact numbers.
Nashville man Robert Eugene Wills, 24, was arrested at the New Market carnival on July 24 1968 car theft and unauthorized use charges. Bond set at 2750. Wills also faces three motor vehicle warrants for stopping at a device, obeying police, and engine keys, from City Police. Trial date July 13 in Trial Magistrate's Court. Sheriff Crummel P Jacobs ordered the warrants served at the county jail after the arrest.
Stock market prices drifted upward today in slow trading as the Dow Jones average of 30 industrial stocks rose 1.03 to 670.39 at 10:30 a.m. Advances slightly outpaced declines among NYSE issues traded.
President Nixon ordered striking UTU members back to work for 60 days to avert a rail crisis while an emergency board investigates the long running dispute over firemen on diesel locomotives. Federal action paused a nationwide shutdown as the National Mediation Board and Labor Department coordinated the effort.
Secretary Rogers told Prime Minister Sato no textile negotiation breakdown would delay Okinawa’s 1972 return. Sato said progress was made on speeding up liberalization to attract U.S. capital. Details remain undisclosed as talks continue with trade experts. Rogers also urged Japan to aid Southeast Asia and Vietnam and Cambodia.
Freight trains resumed through Brunswick as President Nixon halted a nationwide walkout by the United Transportation Union. UTU Local 631 Brunswick said the national order endures for at least sixty days while about 250 workers at the terminal and 400 more honoring picket lines remain out. Freight and passenger trains were idled from 6 am Tuesday, with officials noting major yard job cuts and firemen concerns amid local and national issues.
U S helicopter crews and ground units fought a North Vietnamese force near the Khe Sanh area in a seven hour battle. Officials report up to 126 enemy killed, two American soldiers killed and six wounded. A paratrooper reaction force was airlifted in, as the clash followed another northern counteraction near Quang Tri. The Khe Sanh base, abandoned in 1968, remains a focal point of the ongoing northern battles.
About 30 members of the non partisan CBW Campaign arrive at Fort Detrick at 4 30 p m completing the last leg of their march from Washington begun July 1. The CBW Campaign is a coalition of nine peace organizations conducting the first phase of their protest.
Arnold L. Amass pharmacist and owner of Finks burg and Taneytown Pharmacies in Carroll County filed for the Maryland Senate representing Frederick and Carroll Counties. Westminster resident, Carroll School Board member, Rotary and Lions Club officer, and former Rotary Exchange Fellow. A later CBW protest walk moved toward Fort Detrick with a Frederick stop and a Baker Park rally featuring Lawrence Scott.
In Hanoi and Saigon experts dispute how the war will end, with North Vietnam predicting victory and a neutral, independent South Vietnam while Saigon cites strong defenses around the 17th Parallel. General Hoang Xuan Lam, commander of I Corps, argues South Vietnam will prevail, insisting his 150000 troops and territorial forces do not desert. He says Communists plan a decade of fighting, but South Vietnam will win.
President Nixon urges Congress to empower Indian tribes to run federally funded benefit programs and schools, seek more federal aid, and create an assistant secretary for Indian affairs. He backs restoring 48000 acres near Blue Lake to Taos Pueblo for religious and tribal use, with most lands kept forever wild.
