793 Killed In Worst Weekend
The Fourth of July holiday weekend saw at least 793 deaths nationwide across highways homes beaches pools and parks. Traffic accidents alone totaled 491 good postwar high with drownings at 179 and fireworks fatalities at one in South Dakota. The National Safety Council cited the period as the bloodiest peace time holiday and noted the period ran from July 4 through 6 with details compiling a nationwide AP survey.
