BoE undertakes major redistricting effort in Frederick County

The Frederick County Board of Education launches a wide redistricting plan to add students to Brunswick High School and ease Frederick High School overcrowding. It could shift students to Catoctin High and Thurmont and Brunswick middle schools, with changes aimed for September 1993. A 32 member committee studies Brunswick needs, tied to a new south county high school opening in 1995, and emphasizes using existing space before new schools are built.

Middletown residents voice concerns over redistricting

About 500 residents packed Middletown High School to oppose moving Middletown southern boundary north into Brunswick attendance area. Citizens argued the shift would send Middletown students to Brunswick, reduce local ties, and may not solve Brunswick’s need for 300 more students. Committee member Bob Vandre urged factual discussion and warned of resistance, noting the plan would piggyback changes with Frederick High area. The two hour meeting highlighted housing and land-use differences between the districts.
