Expediting courthouse expansion may strain Frederick budget

Frederick County seeks to condense the courthouse expansion into one year prompting a $1.5 million boost to the fiscal 1999 capital budget. Preservationists Try to Move 1755 Derr House in Dearborn

Preservationists urge moving Frederick's Sebastian Derr House to a new site after a 3-2 vote to dismantle it. They plan to hire a lawyer, recruit volunteers, and raise funds, meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday at 634 Trail Ave to galvanize support and explore relocation options. HRC hears allegations of police brutality in Frederick

Denise West of the Frederick Justice Commission reported multiple alleged police brutality cases against Frederick City Police to the Frederick County Human Relations Commission. A community meeting is planned with the NAACP and Peace Resource Center, as residents protest outside the courthouse and call for accountability, following the Sunday arrest of Edwon Perry.

Referendum on elected school board may make ballot in '98

Frederick County delegates debate an elected school board referendum for 1998. After two 4 4 votes against in 1996 and 1997 Delegate Louise Snodgrass says she has seven votes to approve a ballot question. The delegation will meet Friday to decide if voters will choose between an appointed or elected board amidst concerns over a broad nomination process and political pressures.
