Maryland considers early retirement to curb pension liability
Maryland faces a 50 million dollar pension liability over five years tied to an early retirement plan. If agencies eliminate 60 percent of positions vacated, salary savings could reach 30 million yearly. The bill, backed by Senate President Mike Miller, House Speaker Casper Taylor, and Governor Glendening, would allow 25 year veterans age 50 plus to retire with extra two months credit for each year served, with a two month application window from July for eligibles retiring between July 1, 1996 and June 30, 1997.
