The fifteenth anniversary observance of Samar itan Rebekah Lodge No. 51 IOOF held Thursday at 7 p.m. in Ebert ice cream parlors North Market featured a banquet and program. Officers and members presented mottoes, charters, and history with remarks by Celeste Thomas and Bertha Elkin among others followed by social hours and dancing.
The Frederick County Commissioners supervise improvements to the West Hall interior and East Hall basement at the F F Seminary. The project, expected to take about 30 days, will relocate several county offices, with the Frederick County Children's Aid Society moving first to the West Hall. New floors, plastering, and partition removals are planned, and the Health Department will occupy additional space on the first floor. The Workers and supervisors will relocate by early February and April 1, as planned.
New York January 25 AP The Ward liner Mohawk may have cost 47 lives after a collision with freighter Talisman off Sea Girl New Jersey. The Talisman arrived with 37 passengers and 57 crew saved. 25 missing, 2 known dead, 116 rescued. An inquiry was ordered by the Steamboat Inspection Service.
Annapolis January 25 The Maryland General Assembly has completed four weeks of its 90 day session with little to show. Tax bills unemployment insurance measures and an old age pension measure are among the few items acted upon. The Senate finance committee has not met. Federal relief will not be cut off and Maryland will receive 1 million dollars in February for relief funds after an earlier ultimatum was lifted.
Washington dispatch reports the aged World Court issue and the 4.88 billion relief program facing a difficult Senate path. Committees examine Roosevelt social security plans as Edwin E. Wills outlines child welfare figures, noting 7.4 million children on relief, 109,000 fatherless families, and 719,000 children under ten in federal care.
The Frederick Art Club met Thursday at Mrs Amos John Traver's East Church street home. Members read articles on The Little Dutch Masters focusing on Gabriel Metsu and Jan Steen. other pieces covered Jan Vermeer and Dutch animal painters Paul Potter and Albert Cuyt. Charles R. Holter, acting postmaster since June 1 last year, has been named by President Roosevelt for a four year term and his appointment was confirmed by the Senate last Friday. The choice followed a recommendation from the Democratic State Central committee announced weeks earlier.
