Mutation in SDF-1 Blocks HIV Entry to CACR4 Receptors
A genetic mutation in the chemokine SDF-1 prevents HIV from using CACR4 receptors, affecting T cells rather than macrophages. The study across 2,854 patients across five AIDS cohorts shows about 4 percent have two copies of the mutation and 33 percent have one. Whites show higher carriage rates, suggesting recent evolutionary selection. Coauthors include Dr Winkler, Dr O'Brien, and Fort Detrick researchers such as Modi, Smith, Nelson, Wu, Carrington, and Dean.
