Recession Boosts Md. Child Support Claims Rise
Maryland saw a sharp rise in child support cases as incomes fell, with the Child Support Enforcement Administration reporting 260000 caseloads, up from 160000 five years earlier. The agency notes most cases involve fathers, and interstate evasion complicates collection.
New officers on child support payments
George Fishman legislative counsel says law lacks stronger out-of-state collection provisions but could deter avoidance. Prosecutors must prove the parent left the state to dodge payments, a difficult task. About 13,000 of 260,000 cases involve fathers who left the state.

80 year old veteran pressured by draft registration error
Harry Zorn, an 80 year old decorated World War II veteran living at the Maryland Veterans Home, received a Selective Service warning of fines and prison for not registering. A mistaken birth year 1911 instead of 1971 in voter records triggered the notice. He never received the October warning but tried to resolve it by phone with no success.
