15-year-old dies after shed fire blast in Frederick County
Frederick County youth Thomas Hoopengardner died at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday at Washington Hospital Center burn unit after severe burns from a shed fire on Pleasant View Road. Four youths had entered the shed to smoke when a lighter ignited vapors from gas, causing flames to engulf him and others to roll him on the ground to extinguish. He suffered third degree burns over about 70 percent of his body. the incident prompted a fire marshal warning to avoid open flames near combustibles.
