Holstein Steer Marketing and Feeding Guidelines
Agri Views outlines Holstein steer economics noting market prices trail choice beef steers of similar weight by about 3 percent dress and live value. From birth to 300 pounds Holsteins convert feed as well as beef breeds, but from 800 to 1,200 pounds they gain more slowly and consume more feed, and 1,200 to 1,500 pounds is costly. Recommend marketing near 1,200 pounds after 100 days on an 80 percent concentrate diet for best choice grade. Holsteins gain rate and feeding efficiency decline after 800 pounds, making 1,500 pounds often uneconomical.
