Johnson’s tax plan faces mixed reviews in Congress
President Johnson defended his proposed defense spending and revenue plan, urging higher taxes on liquor and tobacco while resisting a general tax boost. Senators questioned defense costs and tax-cut restorations, with some supporting increased revenues as necessary for Viet Nam, and Johnson pledging no delay in funding if required. He outlined peace efforts, a 21 day bombing pause, and a goal to end the war while protecting South Viet Nam’s future.

Houck Sees 15 Years of Maryland Redistricting Chaos
Frederick County legislator William E. Houck warned at a Frederick League of Women Voters meeting that Supreme Court redistricting will trigger about 15 years of chaos as Maryland adjusts to population based districts. He argued county government could be weakened and noted counties are not political entities under the ruling.
