Frederick County awoke to a wintry mix with freezing rain and snow, closing all public schools Thursday afternoon before reopening Friday. Roads were slippery on secondary routes, state and city crews salted and cindered major arteries, while forecasts call for colder temps and more snow Saturday.
A 12 year old county boy was admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital after a car he rode in crashed on icy roads and overturned three miles west of Frederick. Passenger Dwight Gibbs, 14, received minor injuries and was released. Driver Daniel H. Fox Jr., 17, was charged with speed too great for conditions and failing to stop for a stop sign.
U S and Greek forces launched a joint land and sea search for a C47 twin engine transport missing with ten aboard after radio contact was lost near noon. The aircraft had been en route from Cigli Air Base Turkey to Naples Italy, with nine Americans and one Italian.
Police said twenty five Koreans drowned off Sosan on Korea's west coast after their fishing boat capsized in a stormy Yellow Sea. Eleven persons were rescued.
President Johnson nominated Robert C. Weaver for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and Robert C. Wood to be undersecretary. Weaver, 58, has led the housing agencies since the department formed. Senators praised the appointment. NAACP leaders hailed the historic choice.
