Sleepy defense costs a bridge slam in 1908 hand
James Jacoby describes a bridge hand where North with four plus cards in a major, South shifts to three spades to reveal control and invites a six no trump. A string of clever plays by declarer and a lenient defense by West allow dummy to be reached twice, yet East’s diamond play proves immaterial as trumps split unfavorably. Poor West may sleep nights recalling this hand.
