Farm numbers decline as productivity rises in US agriculture
A USDA ERS study notes by 1992 the US had 1.93 million farms, down from 2.09 million in 1987, with continued declines likely into 1997 and 2002. Despite fewer farms, output rises as remaining farms grow larger and more productive, with farm sales and output per unit of input increasing since the 1980s.
