Washington Jan. 41%)-Senators Williams and George joined Byrd in opposing Truman's plan to grant a special income tax exemption for Eisenhower's living expenses. They argued it could set a precedent and urged full tax on all earnings. The proposal would also apply to Nixon and Martin, with exemptions repealed for now. If enacted, Eisenhower would save about 39,000 annually, while Nixon and Martin would gain tax relief. current law exempts their allowances, but repeal already passed this month.

Parkway Split Over Canal Route Faces Strong Opposition
Local business and civic leaders clash over the proposed parkway along the historic canal right of way. Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce calls it an unnecessary extravagance while Cumberland and Allegany officials back the project to boost tourism and development. Environment groups warn erosion and flood risks, and debate centers on preserving canal history versus creating road access from Hancock to Cumberland. Some legislators hint at partial construction to prove the concept.

Loyalty Was Secondary Says Loyalty Was Secondary
Washington January 4 Senator McCarran Democratic argued that State Department security checks show loyalty to the United States was treated as secondary rather than fully considered regarding American employees of the United Nations The Nevada senator released a memorandum showing secret 1948 arrangements to supply information about US citizens employed by the UN He criticized a standard that could deem such individuals poor risks based on political sentiment asserting it relegates US security He also cited a Byrnes letter noting Alger Hiss had initial control over UN staff recruitment and Hiss later served time for perjury

Tavern Cited By Liquor Control Board
HAGERSTOWN Jan. 4 The South Mountain Tavern was cited by the Washington County Liquor Control Board on charges of selling to minors and the proprietor was ordered to appear before the board on January 16. In show cause why the alcoholic beverage license should not be suspended or revoked Board Chairman Francis H Urer said the citation was issued on the evidence furnished by State's attorney John Heliodas relating to a fatal accident at Boonsboro December 24. A car in which Frederick Countas was riding was struck by a car driven by David Wade of Boonsboro. Chairman Urer said evidence suggested minors in Wade car had been served beer at the South Mountain Tavern shortly before the crash.
