Pennel the Sullivan Award winner defies vaulter stereotypes
John Pennel, Northeast Louisiana State senior, captured the Amateur Athletic Union James E. Sullivan Award as the nation’s top athlete. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound vaulter broke or tied world records seven times in six months, clearing 16 feet and becoming the first to clear 17 feet. Pennel, a fiber-glass vaulter, is also an honor student who volunteers, donates winnings to charity, and mentors youths, arguing vaulters are true athletes.
