Black-eyed Peas In a Southern New Year Tale
A humorous 1985 reminiscence unfolds about Southern New Year rituals of eating black-eyed peas for luck. Precipitation disrupts area with outages and ice closures
Rain and freezing precipitation caused more trouble than a December blizzard. Ice toppled a limb in Walkersville, halting a power line and triggering a one hour and two minute outage. The Jefferson trolley in Frederick was stranded by ice on its overhead lines, with school closings and traffic incidents reported. Calvary Church's Threads of Gold elected officers for the year, while Emmitsburg Town Council approved a 6500 dollar bypass project to relieve chronic water shortages. Frederick's Sandy Bergeron planned a bus trip for Young Americans for Freedom to Constitution Hall with speakers including Senators Munaist and Dodd, Representatives Selden and Brock, and Admiral Burke.
