Maryland bill pushes Maryland PSC toward local telecom competition

Five years after federal telecom deregulation, Delegate Donald Elliott urges Maryland regulators to speed up local competition. The bill directs the Public Service Commission to hold hearings by 2003 and report progress on deregulation, with 14 cosponsors including nine Republicans.

El Salvador trip aids quake victims from local church

Elizabeth Ruiz of Frederick County Health Department joined Bente Costello Emmanuel Church volunteers to deliver food medicines and clothing to a 30 family village in El Salvador devastated by three earthquakes on Jan 13 Feb 13 and Feb 17. Volunteers from Boston and New York supplied rice beans and water. A second delivery is planned for April as rebuilding begins.

Harris Named Acting Election Director in Montgomery County

ROCKVILLE The Montgomery County Board of Elections appointed Sara Harris acting election director after the retirement of Richard G. Goehler. Harris, with the board since 1936 and most recently deputy director, also serves as secretary of the Maryland Association of Election Officials and participates on several accessibility task forces.
