Debt burden seen as manageable by 1955 balance in U S

The United States Chamber of Commerce argues for careful supervision of consumer credit rather than strict controls. It cites a gross debt of about 950 billion in 1954, rising toward 1 trillion by end of 1953 estimates, with per family and per person debts noted. It emphasizes debt as a manageable load in prosperity and a potential drag in downturns. It also notes debt relative to national output at 197 percent in 1955, down from 233 percent in 1938, implying repayment could occur in under two years with full effort.
