Weather from The Associated Press reports widespread wet conditions across the nation with rain sleet and snow. Hazardous driving in the Midwest due to ice and snow caused multiple deaths while six inches of snow fell in Kansas and a vast west coast low pressure system spurred rain along the coast from Canada to Mexico.

Helicopter Lands Man On Lighthouse in Navy Mercy Mission

A midnight rescue off Chesapeake Bay saw Lt Cmdr William C. Casey pilot a Patuxent helicopter to the roof of Holland’s Island Bar Light. Lt Charles E. Cook, carried in a sling, was lowered onto the lighthouse to receive medical aid after a rocket attack by Navy planes. The mission occurred during a gunnery training run from Atlantic City. The helicopter hovered about ten feet above the roof while the crew ensured a safe hoist and entry for Cook as a boat approached from the mainland. The incident follows rockets striking the lighthouse during the same period.
