Milk price drop expected after record highs
Dairy analysts foresee a sharp fall from a December peak of 14.93 per hundredweight to around 11 in May or June as production rises and exports of nonfat dry milk shape prices. USDA economists say spring declines are typical, and local farmers expect a normalization after recent highs.

Fertilizer prices rise modestly amid 1990 outlook
A USDA ERS preliminary report says fertilizer costs may be up about 4 percent from last fall but spring prices could be down about 4 percent from year-earlier levels. Nitrogen prices likely rise most as domestic supplies tighten while phosphate and potash stay adequate with modest price shifts. Global nutrient use rose 3 percent last year and farm energy costs may stay near 1989 levels. Farm expenditures may climb 4.6 percent to 9.09 billion as crop plantings grow and irrigation rises.
