Ten days prior, police in Frederick arrested 25 adults and one teenager in housing projects for selling weak crack cocaine. The operation seized over $50,000 in vehicles and aimed to disrupt the cocaine cycle by intercepting buyers. Prosecutors say the reverse buy was a year in the works and intends to deter drug activity, though critics question its impact and the policing costs involved.
Four people died and ten were treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries after a natural gas explosion at the Super 8 Motel in Hagerstown Maryland early Sunday. Guests escaped by jumping from windows as firefighters searched the charred building.
In Manila Dick Cheney pressed Philippine defense chiefs to secure terms for six U S bases amid large protests and anger over funding cuts. Protesters clashed with police near Cheney s hotel and at Clark Air Base while President Aquino declined to meet him over aid disputes.
State fire marshal warns customers who bought diesel at Cornell's Exxon on Md. 194 over the weekend may have received regular gasoline. A delivery error on Saturday unloaded 2,500 gallons into the diesel tank, posing engine damage risks if used as heating fuel. Contact the station if you purchased fuel late Saturday or Sunday.
Taneytown man Dell E. Driggers 29 reportedly killed himself Saturday after police sought him as a suspect in the shooting death of Susan M. Miller 32 outside a Frederick bar. Driggers was found in a Leesburg Best Western room with a single gunshot wound. Miller died at the Silver Dollar Lounge on S. Market Street and two other people were wounded. Police said the dispute was domestic.
In Tokyo the Liberal Democratic Party kept a parliamentary majority despite scandals and a voter dip tied to a sales tax. The LDP won 275 seats in the 512 seat house, while opposition Socialists rose to 136 seats and other parties to smaller shares as final results were tallied by NHK.
