State probes drugs and sex at Jessup
About 12 percent of 1200 male inmates at the maximum security Jessup facility showed drug use and reports of prostitution are under investigation. The state raided the prison transferring 19 inmates to Supermax in Baltimore and placing three officers on administrative duty after drug tests. Knives, prison made alcohol and needles were found. Union leader Bernard Ralph noted years of drug activity and said a few officers involved. He said some inmates formed a powerful faction influencing prison life while denying widespread prostitution. Local 1678 represents about 500 Jessup staff.
