The U S trade deficit rose to 115.78 billion last year the widest in five years. The gap with Japan swelled to 59.3 billion surpassing the old record and accounting for over half of total U S shortfall. December's deficit narrowed to 7.4 billion.

Annapolis Knoxville buckskinner and period re enactors urged Maryland lawmakers to lift a prohibition on displaying historical weaponry at schools. They cited demonstrations at two schools in 1992 and argued the law broadly bans weapons on school property, with few exceptions.
