The Treasury asks Congress for authority to apply flexible interest rates and to raise the rate from 3 to 3 1/4 percent on savings bonds. Identical bills go to Senate and House to give the Treasury the same flexibility as other securities. No advantage to delaying purchases until approval.
In 1952 Jesse Langston was found guilty in Circuit Court of stealing a 675 diamond ring from Remsberg's jewelry, receiving a three year term in the House of Correction. The judge called the evidence strong, rejecting defense claims of insufficient proof and noting Langston's long criminal record. The case featured identifications by store employees and a jail lineup in 1952.
Two 23 year old African American soldiers Winfred D. Moore of Virginia Beach and Thomas J. Edwards of Ardmore were executed at Fort Leavenworth for separate murders in 1953. Moore killed a cab driver in North Carolina during a robbery. Edwards strangled a German girl in Germany.
Colder Arctic air moved from Canada into the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley spreading south and east. Temperatures fell to zero or below in northern Midwest and Dakotas with light snow flurries in southern Lower Michigan and Bemidji Minnesota, while frost and cold winds moved toward the Ohio Valley and Atlantic states. A Maryland woman, Idella Stevens, 65, was severely injured after being struck by a car on Maryland 36 near her home and admitted to Miners Hospital with multiple injuries.

Adm. Arthur W. Radford told a closed Senate session on January 30 that adopting the Eisenhower Middle East program could lead the Russians to withdraw or “pull in their horns” in the region. His testimony before the Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees was released to the public today.
