Campaign cost limits debated in 1956 report
Senate subcommittee reports campaign spending far exceeds the $3 million limit, with television costs totaling 5.4 million for Republicans and 2.1 million for Democrats in 1955. Total party spending nears 33 million, though full totals are uncertain. Expenditures by labor and other groups may exceed reported amounts, and reporting is seen as inadequate and unmanageable. The piece questions realism of current limits and the influence of special interests.
