Willamette River Flood Near Seawall Inches From Portland Gap
The Willamette surged through towns south of Portland with docks logs and a refrigerator adrift yet Portland itself was spared as the river rose to 28.5 feet just under the 28 foot seawall. Flooding forced evacuations across Oregon Washington and Idaho as consequences of melting snow and four days of rain abated to cooler dry weather. Federal aid was approved while Army Engineers held back flow at Bonneville Dam narrowing the flood surge. Three people died in Oregon and at least one in Washington with numerous communities elevated above flood stages.
