Maryland Saves Money On Bond Sale After Delayed Issue
Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein delayed an $80 million bond sale last September due to high bids. On Wednesday the state sold a total $130 million, with a low bid of 6.67 percent from a Chase Securities and First National Bank of Maryland led syndicate, saving taxpayers over $1.5 million despite some lost interest from construction payments. Treasurer Lucille Maurer noted better market conditions but acknowledged tradeoffs from the delay.

Soviet Industry Falls Short of Gorbachev Goals in 1989
In 1989 most industries failed to deliver consumer goods promised by Mikhail Gorbachev. A diplomat cited inflation, alcohol emphasis, and Western imports as the main causes of meager gains, with food output rising only 1 percent after a $110 million agricultural investment. Wheat farmers fared best, alcohol output jumped 19 percent, imports from the West rose 24 percent, and overall industrial production increased 17 percent due to contract failures and supply issues.
