Maryland poet laureate fights bill to end tenure
Vincent Godfrey Burns, Maryland’s poet laureate, vows to defend his eight year tenure as lawmakers propose a bill to cap the post at a single three year term. The measure, sponsored by House Speaker Lowe and Del Grumbacher, would have the governor appoint nominees through the Maryland State Poetry Society. Burns calls the move a deliberate attack and says the society is behind efforts to end his tenure, while supporters say the bill targets the idea of lifetime tenure and would open the chair to younger poets.
