Senate may not end Maryland scholarship program this year
In Annapolis the Senate Rules Committee still debates abolishing Maryland’s unique legislative scholarship plan. Leaders say a vote this year is unlikely as critics urge reform while lawmakers discuss limiting or ending the program. House has backed abolition in recent years, but lawmakers doubt action will occur in 1995.

Education bill backed by county officials in Maryland
Frederick County Commissioners voted to back a bill to reduce the maintenance of effort for education to 60 percent of prior year funding. They argued a fluctuating economy and capacity issues justify the change, while others called for a barometer to measure ongoing support. In Baltimore, Black Dollar Days launched with ministers urging black spending to support black-owned businesses during Black History Month.
