Garssons Freed On Additional Charges

Baltimore February 1 Henry M and Murray Garssons munitions makers who served prison terms for defrauding government on war contracts were freed today of additional charges. The government said the brothers had already served an entirely adequate sentence as a result of their conviction in the earlier case. Henry aged 54 was paroled after more than 19 months and Murray 61 after more than 20 months. Both had been sentenced to eight months to two years in Washington with former Congressman Andrew J May. May was released in September 1950 about nine months after they were sentenced. The 1948 indictments in Federal Court for the Baltimore District were dismissed. Assistant U S Attorney General James M MeinErney noted Murray’s poor health and said there would be little justification in forcing a second trial on substantially identical charges. The brothers had been accused of making false statements to obtain defense material contracts.

Appointments To Be On Sectional Basis

Washington February 1 Secretary of the Treasury Snyder told Senators first appointments to top regional jobs in a reorganized Internal Revenue Bureau would be sectionally made. A district commissioner job would go to a resident of the district, not an outsider. Senator Underwood praised the plan while Chairman McClellan warned the commissioner could still transfer an outsider to a top regional vacancy. The reform would replace 64 politically appointed collectors with Civil Service employees and likely establish 25 to 27 regional offices. The House has approved the plan. Senate action by mid March would set its fate.
