Rocky Seeks Tax Increases For New York Budget
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller urged a record 1.11 billion in tax hikes to fund an 8.45 billion state budget. He blamed federal delays in revenue sharing and warned of a possible decline in public services without Washington's aid. The plan includes a 4 percent surcharge on income tax, higher top brackets, loss of cash credits, a 1 percentage point sales tax rise, gas and tobacco tax hikes, higher motor vehicle fees, and about a 30 percent rise in taxes on corporate and financial earnings. He said parts could be repealed if federal aid arrives.
