Opposition demands elections after martial law lift in Pakistan
In Islamabad opposition parties denounced President Zia as fraud for lifting eight years of martial law and called for immediate elections. Zia announced the end of martial law and transfer of power to Prime Minister Junejo while remaining army commander. He said the constitution authorities were disbanded and martial law offices closed. Security forces stayed alert as parties rejected the move, claiming Junejo’s government is a front for the military. The government proclaimed a holiday to mark the lifting. Opponents urged all parties to participate in elections to restore civilian rule.
