Philadelphia December 30 George A Bruce night watchman at a railroad contractor tool house on Jackson street wharf Delaware River was murdered Saturday night. His skull was split with an axe and his throat cut from ear to ear with the same instrument. Harry Johnson employed as a watchman by the same contractors reported the murder and was taken into custody as a robbery motive is suspected since $12 and a revolver were missing. David Henry another nearby worker was arrested in connection with the crime.
In Philadelphia on December 3 %, arrangements were made to appoint receivers for the Asphalt Company of America and the National Asphalt Company in anticipation of default on fixed charges due January 1. Vice Chancellors Emery and Stevens in Newark will name Henry Tatnall and John M. Mack as receivers. Formal applications were filed Saturday. Fixed charges totaling 500000 including semi annual interest were due Thursday next. News spread that the two asphalt firms would default and insolvency led to the receivership plan.
