Baltimore December 28 The Spenger fest Association outlines the Kaiserpreis poem contest for the 20th Saengerfest to be held in Baltimore in 1908. All German poets in the United States may enter poems up to 20 lines with no sign name, using a motto instead. Submissions due March 1, 1992 to Professor Stephen Steinmueller. name and motto sent separately to L H Wieman.
Washington, Dec 28 The secretary of the navy ordered all Washington navy and Marine Corps officers to assemble in full dress at the secretary’s office on January 1 at 11 p m and then move to the White House to pay respects to the president. A similar order will be sent by Secretary Root to army officers. The White House released the New Year’s reception program. Citizens will follow government officials and diplomats in the usual order of precedence.
Senator Chauncey M. Depew and Miss May Palmer married in a civil ceremony at the United States consulate in Nice. Witnesses included Baron von Andre and Baron de Cantalause. A Catholic rite followed at Notre Dame and a second ceremony at an American Church with sailors from the American squadron. The couple plan to sail home on January 1.
Four hundred men were killed when General Marin attacked Honda on the Magdalena river December 9 with 1200 rebels. 439 garrison soldiers fought from dawn until late night and 200 reinforcements arrived at 3 a.m. Government forces claimed victory.
Reports from Cabalogan Samar recount a brutal clash at Dapdap where Captain Schoeffel and 28 Ninth Infantry soldiers faced a large bolomen force. Seven Americans killed, six wounded, including Captain Schoeffel, who is not gravely hurt, as the enemy is driven from the field.
United States Senator William J. Sewell died at his Camden home after several months of illness. He was surrounded by his wife and children, aged 66, and his passing was peaceful with a military funeral planned, including a state escort.
In Scranton Pennsylvania a runaway Ontario and Western train of 50 coal cars and a 100 ton engine crashed between Preston Park and Star Light. Four workers Melvin Whitling Charles Millard Richard Budd Patrick Duty died. about 1,590 tons of coal scattered. The train reportedly reached 90 mph. a flange broke, engine toppled, gondolas broken, and cars piled up.
In Allentown a man is jailed with two others as accessories after Fred Heist was killed at the Hotel Cornwall in Emans. A baseball bat was used. Engleman is accused of wielding it in the drunken incident that led to Aleck Rozala's death. Stauffer jailed on bail. others released. Also reported: Ollie Atherton, 14, drowns rescuing siblings from ice on White's Pond. Treated and saved siblings Raisley and Susie Atherton. Andres of Salon tendered and accepted a federal seagoing ship assignment to the Philippine Islands, departing March, to Sebo then Manila.
The body of Nell Cropsey was found floating face downward in the Pasquotank River opposite her father’s home. A coroner’s jury ruled death by a blow to the left temple and drowning. James Wilcox is in custody as the investigation continues with military guards and city officials enforcing order.
