Ferry ride brightens trip for commuters
White's Ferry operates daily across the Potomac, carrying about 200 regular commuters and many tourists. The 1160 foot crossing runs every 12 minutes from 5 am to 11 pm, with capacity for 15 vehicles and fares of 250 for cars one way, 125 for motorcycles, and 50 cents for pedestrians. Private business since 1946, the ferry is powered by a 100 horsepower diesel and guided by a cable, facing weather and ice challenges while serving drivers who value relief from beltway traffic.
