May Ask New State Taxes
Governor McKeldin indicated he may ask the 1955 General Assembly to impose a state cigarette tax and raise three other taxes to raise 30 million dollars to balance Maryland's budget. Proposals include sales, income, and motor vehicle titling taxes, with the cigarette tax expected to be supplemented by other measures to reach the target. The Grotz commission favored routing increases to the general fund and not sharing with localities, and noted Maryland lacks a cigarette tax.
