Seaborne aid network revived as Kismayu port reopens

U S Marines and Belgian paratroopers seized Kismayu port and airport reopening a key gateway for famine relief. French and U S troops in Mogadishu and Baidoa came under fire with no French casualties reported. A UN child agency spokesman noted aid deliveries resumed as a first truck convoy reached Baidoa amid ongoing clashes.

Walkersville youth dies in accident

A 16 year old Walkersville resident, Thomas W. Rutherford Jr., died in a Saturday night one vehicle crash on Devilbiss Bridge Road near Dublin Road. He was pronounced dead at Washington County Hospital after a state police helicopter transported him from the scene. Rutherford did not have a driver's license, and deputies said he lost control on a curve causing the truck to strike an embankment and a utility pole. The crash raises Frederick County road fatalities to 33 this year.

Edward J. Daugherty dies in Frederick at 84

Edward Jacob Doc Daugherty 84 of 919 Motter Ave Frederick died Sunday at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Husband of Kathryn Mercer Daugherty he was born April 6 1938 in Gettysburg PA. A ham radio operator trumpet player and youth advocate he held leadership with Optimist Club Chamber of Commerce and Elks Lodge. He served in the State Guard during World War II and coached a Little League team. Continued on Page A4.

Spelunkers Trapped Five Hours Near Chambersburg Pa

Two Frederick residents were trapped for about five hours in a cave near Chambersburg Pennsylvania while exploring with a third person. The group was roped together in a narrow shaft and endured 30s temperatures before rescuers arrived. They carried food water and lights and credit the cave rescue system for the outcome.
