Johns Hopkins Transplant Helps 14-Month-Old Boy Benefit From Mother's Liver
A 14-month-old boy, Tyler Smith of Matawan New Jersey, received the left lateral segment about 25 percent of his mother's liver at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The procedure, a first for the hospital and one of 62 in the United States, aims for normal growth of both livers. Tyler will take anti-rejection medicine for life but is expected to lead a normal life. His mother Dara Smith 35 donated the liver after their decision to avoid waiting for a donor. The boy was born with biliary atresia and developed cirrhosis, placing him on the transplant list in February.
