Maryland eyes income tax hike to fund education needs
Maryland lawmakers will be asked next February to raise the ordinary income tax from 3 to 4 percent to boost state aid to education. Gov. Tawes expects an effective date of January 1, 1965, with surplus revenues and a solid economy supporting the plan. The move aims to fund higher teacher salaries and future spending, estimated to cost $14 million in its first year.
