Solons Open Filibuster Over SST
The Senate opened a fierce debate over ending federal subsidies for the SST project. Sen. Proxmire pressed Magnuson on motives behind backing a reduced SST bill, while Bible warned of job losses and higher total costs if funding is cut. Maryland Board Eyes End to Spanking in Schools
Maryland Board of Education proposed revising by-laws to abolish corporal punishment statewide citing doubts about its efficacy. The plan would let 23 county boards retain it where necessary for order, with hearings set around the January 27 meeting. The board also approved sending 170 pages to the 1971 General Assembly and backed Title II projects in Carroll, Charles, Prince Georges, and Talbot counties, while defending a $111,000 pupil services project amid concerns over racial tensions and school reopening.
