U Mich study: October market plunge shakes confidence

The University of Michigan survey finds consumer confidence dampened by the Oct 19 Wall Street drop, with the Index of Consumer Sentiment at 43.1 down 7.5 percent from October and 12.64 from September. While national confidence wanes, personal finances stay favorable and a rebound may follow from price discounts and lower rates. The study surveyed 501 people between Oct 29 and Nov 23 with a 4 point margin of error. Black Monday notably raised market news salience among respondents.
