Thresholds in ancient Hebrew and other cultures
The threshold, often stone, was sacred among Hebrews and other ancient peoples. Folklore held thresholds haunted by spirits and many thresholds were surrounded by superstitions. Some early gatekeepers of the door in Old Testament history may have kept thresholds, and Zephaniah 1:9 mentions punishment for those who leap on a threshold.
